Want E.P.A. Hotel and Convention Center Business? Be a Bit
Greener–From The New York Times
“The Environmental Protection Agency has given its
procurement staff a list of questions that, as of May 1,
they must ask hotels and convention centers that are bidding
for E.P.A. business. The questions range from sweeping
queries about recycling programs and energy efficiency to
specific ones about paperless billing and reused towels. The
agency said it would consider the answers when it evaluates
bids…” By Claudia H. Deutsch
In Hong Kong, Diners Fined For Leaving Leftovers-From
The Christian Science Monitor
“Deep in the belly of one of Hong Kong's largest malls, a
mechanical stomach is digesting a social ill that is now
catching the attention of this city's restaurateurs and
environmentalists: too many leftovers. Elsewhere in the
territory, restaurant owners are starting to sound like your
mother. They are putting little signs on tables that
threaten to fine diners who leave food on their plates…”– by

Are Mobile Phones Wiping Out Our Bees? – The
Independent
“It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror
film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the
mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the
world's harvests fail. They are putting forward the theory
that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech
gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre
mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt
disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last
week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which
started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was
beginning to hit Britain as well. The theory is that
radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees'
navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving
species from finding their way back to their hives.
Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back
this up...” – by Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross
Warning Is Sounded On Ethanol Use -From Los Angeles
Times
“Ethanol, widely touted as a greenhouse-gas-cutting fuel,
would have serious health effects if heavily used in cars,
producing more ground-level ozone than gasoline,
particularly in the Los Angeles Basin, according to a
Stanford University study out today. ‘Ethanol is being
promoted as a clean and renewable fuel that will reduce
global warming and air pollution,’ said Mark Z. Jacobson, an
associate professor of civil and environmental engineering
and author of the study in the online edition of
Environmental Science and Technology. ‘But our results show
that a high blend of ethanol poses an equal or greater risk
to public health than gasoline, which already causes
significant health damage…’"—By Janet Wilson
Doing Right Thing Isn't Easy, Even For Those Who Want To
-From USA Today
“Most Americans believe that dramatic steps are needed to
conserve energy and reduce the threat of global warming, but
they are willing to go only so far in changing their
lifestyles to "go green." A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds that
more Americans than ever — 60%, up from 48% a decade ago —
believe that global warming has begun to affect the climate.
A slightly larger percentage think it will cause major or
extreme changes in climate and weather during the next 50
years…”—By Patrick O'Driscoll and Elizabeth Weise
